Stop Calling ChatGPT Errors “Hallucinations”
Are AI hallucinations just a softer name for ChatGPT making up facts?
Jonathan Schaeffer (AI Researcher) argues that calling false AI-generated answers “hallucinations” makes the problem sound harmless. ChatGPT does not understand questions like a human does, yet it can present fabricated information with confidence.
Instead of asking how often an AI model “hallucinates,” he believes we should ask a more direct question: What is its error rate?
The language matters. When an AI error sounds convincing, users may trust misinformation without realizing that anything is wrong.
Should we call them AI hallucinations—or simply ChatGPT errors?
