“You're probably one product manager for a few developers.”
What if AI makes product managers more important instead of replacing them?
Jeff Keyes (AI Product Strategist & CTO at Allstacks) explains why AI-assisted software development could fundamentally change the structure of product and engineering teams.
Traditionally, a single product manager might support seven to ten software developers.
But as AI coding tools accelerate development, Jeff believes that ratio may need to change.
Engineering teams can now build features, generate code, and test solutions much faster.
That creates a new challenge.
Someone still needs to understand customer problems, evaluate product decisions, prioritize features, and determine whether the team is building something valuable.
When developers move faster, the demand for product judgment can increase.
Jeff suggests that highly productive AI-assisted engineering teams may eventually need one product manager for only a few developers.
It's a different perspective from the common narrative that artificial intelligence will simply eliminate technology jobs.
AI may reduce certain types of work while increasing the importance of customer understanding, product strategy, and decision-making.
Could AI actually increase the demand for skilled product managers?
