Cheaper rocket launches won't automatically make human spaceflight affordable.

Ethan Barajas (Co-Founder & CEO of Icarus Robotics) explains why the true cost of sending astronauts to space goes far beyond the rocket. Mission control, safety requirements, testing, life support, training, and the infrastructure required to operate around humans can remain expensive even as launch costs fall.

As SpaceX and the commercial space industry continue reducing the cost of reaching orbit, the next challenge is reducing the operational cost of keeping humans safely working there. Space robotics and automation could help by taking over repetitive tasks and reducing the amount of human support required.

Lower launch costs may open the door to space, but they don't solve the entire economics of human spaceflight.
