Is AI actually replacing product managers, engineers, and other tech jobs?
Yue Zhao (Product Leader & Executive Coach) says the recent shift in tech employment is more complicated than simply blaming artificial intelligence.
Part of it comes from pandemic-era overhiring. Companies hired ahead of expected growth, but that growth didn't always happen where they expected.
At the same time, AI is changing how much work one person can accomplish.
In areas like engineering, research, and data, teams can now build, analyze, and research faster with AI tools. That doesn't necessarily mean these roles disappear completely, but companies may need fewer people or may not hire at the same pace.
But Yue sees a different pattern emerging at more senior levels.
AI can generate research, help build a business model, or accelerate execution—but someone still has to decide what to do next.
Should the company invest? What should the team build? Which direction should it take?
Those decisions still require judgment, leadership, and accountability.
The shift may not simply be AI replacing people. It may be AI changing which human skills are most valuable.
Is AI eliminating tech jobs—or pushing the workforce toward higher-level decision making?
