AI Could Keep Old Coal Plants Alive
Could the AI boom actually keep old coal power plants running longer?
Rob Gramlich (Electric Grid Expert) explains that many existing coal plants are around 60 years old, increasingly uneconomic, and less reliable than they once were. But rapidly rising electricity demand changes the equation.
If the power grid urgently needs more electricity through 2028 and 2029, and new natural gas and renewable generation can't be added quickly enough, the economics could favor keeping some existing coal plants operating longer than previously expected.
It's an unexpected consequence of the AI infrastructure boom: one of the world's newest technologies could increase pressure to keep some of its oldest electricity infrastructure running.
